  • FACTS ABOUT HEART FAILURE

    • Heart failure is one of the most common reasons for hospital admission among those of 65years and older.

    • If a person with failure of one ventricle lives long enough, it will tend to progress to failure of both ventricle.

    DEFINITION OF HEART FAILURE

    Heart failure is a condition in which the heart muscles are weakened and cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s need.

    CAUSES OF HEART FAILURE

    Conditions that damage or overwork the heart muscle can cause heart failure.  Some of then include; Coronary heart disease, Diabetes, High blood pressure, Arrhythmia, Congenital heart defects, Heart valve disease etc

    Other factors include; HIV/AIDS, Alcohol, Cocaine abuse, Thyroid disorder, Cancer treatments such as Radiation and Chemotherapy.

    TYPES OF HEART FAILURE

    Heart failure can either be Right Sided (when the heart can’t pump enough blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen) or Left Sided (when the heart can’t pump enough oxygenated blood to the rest of the body).


    SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEART FAILURE

    For Right Sided Heart Failure, the signs and symptoms include;

    • Peripheral oedema,

    • Ascites,

    • Liver enlargement

    While Left Sided Heart Failure include;

    • Shortness of breath

    • Fatigue.

    DIAGNOSIS OF HEART FAILURE

    Early diagnosis and treatment can help patients with heart failure live longer. Heart failure can be diagnosed by ascertain the following; medical and family history, physical examination (especially listening to the heart and lungs sound with stethoscope). Other tests include; EKG, chest X-ray, cardiac MRI, Echocardiograph, BNP blood test etc.


    PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF HEART FAILURE

    The key to prevent heart failure is to reduce the high risk factors like;

    Proper management of coronary heart artery disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, eating healthy food, staying physically fit, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, reduce and manage stress etc. By treating the underlying cause, heart failure can sometimes be corrected.

    The treatment usually include;

    Lifestyle changes like eating healthy food, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, etc. Medications like ACE inhibitors, Aldosterone, Antagonists, Digoxin, Diuretics, Beta blockers, etc. Surgery and Medical devices like coronary bypass surgery, heart valve repair or replacement, mechanical heart pumps, Implantable Cardioverter-Definrillation (ICDs), heart transplant etc.
