Pneumonia - What do we know about it?

  • FACTS ABOUT PNEUMONIA


    • Complications of pneumonia include sepsis, pleural effusion and empyema.

    • Pneumonia may cause the air sacs of the lungs to be filled wit pus or fluid.

    DEFINITION


    Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung affecting the air sacs (alveoli) in one or both lungs.


    CAUSES OF PNEUMONIA


    The major causes include;


    • Bacteria eg Streptococcus pneumoniae, mycoplasma pneumoniae etc

    • Virus eg influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) etc

    • Fungi eg pneumocystis jiroveci

    • Other causes are parasites and aspirations.

    • The two age groups at high risk for pneumonia are children of two years or less and adult of 65yrs and above.

      Other high risk group include chronic disease patients, smokers, prolonged hospitalized patients, weakened or immuno suppressed patients etc

    SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PNEUMONIA


    • Productive cough

    • Fever

    • Chest pain during deep breathing

    • Shortness of breath

    • Skin with bluish tone

    • Weakness

    • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

    DIAGNOSIS OF PNEUMONIA


    Pneumonia can be diagnosed through physical examination and chest X-ray. Other investigations include; CT Scan of the chest, sputum test, aspirate test (fluid from the space between the lungs and the chest cavity), pulse oximetry test, bronchoscopy, urine test etc.


    PREVENTION/TREATMENT OF PNEUMONIA


    It can be prevented through vaccination both in children and adult. The type of treatment prescribed for pneumonia mostly depends on the cause. Bacterial Pneumonia is treated with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. Patients improve after one to three days of treatment. For treating viral Pneumonia some drugs to use include; Neuraminidase inhibitors, rimantadine and amantadine.
